Now into its 44th year, the Council on Foundations Film & Video Festival is the premier showcase for grantmaker-funded media. This year's slate of films embodies the dynamic power media can have to raise awareness and affect change.

These diverse and engaging works will be screened at the 2011 Family Philanthropy Conference, including several Oscar-winning and nominated performances. The films will be shown in the Belasco Meeting Room, 5th Floor of the New York Marriott Marquis. If you would like to view a film on your own, on-demand screenings are available. Please ask for the on-demand viewings at the screening room.

Sunday Night at the Movies

Sunday, January 23 - 8:30–10 p.m.

This documentary is about public school leadership and learning seen through the eyes of two very dynamic and passionate principals. Following these principals and their schools in depth for one year, the film reveals the complex dynamics that connect children, parents, teachers, principals, principal supervisors, school system executive officers, and elected officials. After the screening, meet filmmaker Tod Lending and Jessica Schwartz, senior communications officer, The Wallace Foundation (the film’s sole funder), for an in-depth discussion about the film.

There is a fee for Sunday Night at the Movies: $20 for non-GFEM members and $15 for GFEM members. Seperate registration is required.

More than 120 countries have united to form the International Criminal Court (ICC)—the first permanent court created to prosecute perpetrators of crimes against genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The film follows ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and his team for three years across four continents as he issues arrest warrants for Lord's Resistance Army leaders in Uganda; puts Congolese warlords on trial; shakes up the Colombian justice system; and charges Sudan President Omar Hassan al-Bashir with genocide in Darfur.

An Academy Award-winning film for Best Documentary (Short Subject)
Cleft lip and cleft palate are two of the top birth defects in the developing world. This Academy Award winner for best short documentary follows Pankaj, a social worker trained by the Smile Train Foundation, into the poorest regions of India, where she scours train stations, markets, and schools looking for children with cleft lip and palate. She soon meets Pinki, a shy five-year-old girl born with cleft lip. Pankaj then has to convince family members to take Pinki on the arduous journey to a hospital for the free, corrective surgery that will help her live a normal life.

10:15–11:25 a.m.
A VILLAGE CALLED VERSAILLES

by S. Leo Chiang
A Henry Hampton Award-winning film
For many members of the Versailles community in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina caused their third exile—the first was from North to South Vietnam to escape communist persecution in 1957, and the second was to New Orleans in 1975. But Katrina was not the only threat to the Vietnamese Americans, who made a home while retaining their culture in the New Orleans East. This inspirational film tells the story of how members of the community rose to the challenges, working across generations and cultures to return and rebuild their flooded homes, only to have to then mobilize for a greater fight: against a new government-imposed toxic landfill slated for their neighborhood.
