Philanthropy has its own best and brightest, and each year the Council honors their outstanding achievements and contributions at the Annual Conference.

Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film & Digital Media

Presentation of Award - Saturday Night at the Movies, Saturday, April 28 at 8:30 p.m.

The Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film & Digital Media was named in honor of a man who broke traditional molds of documentary filmmaking and put excellence and innovation at the forefront of his work. The Hampton Award honors the very best in foundation-funded media.

The 2012 Henry Hampton Award goes to "The Interrupters", a MacArthur Foundation-supported film by the creators of "Hoop Dreams"-Steve James, Alex Kotlowitz, and Zak Piper"made with Kartemquin Films. The film presents a raw and unflinching portrait of CeaseFire and its courageous struggle to eradicate violence in the gritty streets of Chicago. The award is presented by Academy Award-winning director John Singleton.


Distinguished Service Award

Presentation of Award - Opening Plenary, Sunday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m.

The Distinguished Service Award, the Council"s highest honor, recognizes an exceptional individual who embodies the intellect, integrity, leadership, and accomplishment that define absolute excellence in the field of philanthropy.

Michele Prichard
Director, Common Agenda, Liberty Hill Foundation

Prichard began working with the foundation as a volunteer in 1982. As executive director from 1989 to 1997, she helped create new grant programs addressing poverty, racial justice, and environmental health. Today, Liberty Hill is considered one of the most innovative public foundations in the country. Prichard serves on the board of the Venice Community Housing Corporation and the steering committee of GREEN LA. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa appointed her to the Harbor Community Benefit Foundation in 2011. She has served as a senior fellow in the UCLA School of Public Affairs since 2007.


Ylvisaker Public Policy Lecture

Presentation of Award and Lecture - Sunday, April 29 from 2:30-4 p.m.

The Ylvisaker Public Policy Lecture Award celebrates grantmakers who help "set the agenda" for public consideration and debate. It is named after Paul Ylvisaker, a courageous and often lone voice on issues such as urban affairs, civil rights, community engagement, the environment, and philanthropy.

Linda Reed
President and CEO, Montana Community Foundation

Reed moved to Montana to become the president of a Helena bank. She subsequently joined the administration of Gov. Marc Racicot as his economic development adviser. She also worked for US West (Qwest) in its policy and law division before joining the foundation in 2001. She is a strong supporter of downtowns as centers of community life and has a passion for helping Montana"s rural communities create choices about their future through development of local community foundations.


Wilmer Shields Rich Awards

Presentation of Awards - Monday, April 30 from 10-11:30 a.m.

America"s philanthropic community has magnificent stories to tell of innovation, generosity, and a deep commitment to changing lives for the better. The recipients of the Wilmer Shields Rich Awards for Excellence in Communications exemplify wonderful ways to communicate effectively"using the right vehicle and the right message at the right time"to encourage others to think and act in ways that support their foundations' missions. The recipients will be individually recognized during this special presentation in the following categories: annual or biennial reports, electronic publications, special reports, and websites.

Scrivner Award for Creative Grantmaking

Presentation of Award - Breakfast Plenary, Tuesday, May 1 at 8 a.m.

This prestigious award is a tribute to the creative legacy left by Robert W. Scrivner, a longtime director of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the first executive director of the Rockefeller Family Fund. It is presented to someone who personifies his leadership, his devotion to upstanding values, and his energy, enthusiasm, and optimism.

Theophilus Gregory
Senior Vice President, El Pomar Foundation

Gregory oversees community outreach activities for the foundation, which makes grants in arts and humanities, education, health, human services, amateur sports, and civic and community initiatives. He also joined the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation staff in September 2001 on a part-time basis as assistant to the president and CEO. He previously served as director of athletics and associate director, Center for the Study of Sport and Leisure, at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Gregory is active in a number of organizations and serves as vice chair of the U.S. Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation board.
