  • Family Dynamics and Governance for Family Trustees

    $225 members $375 non-member
Family philanthropists navigate some daunting interpersonal dynamics in governing their foundations, funds, and giving: roles of sons and daughters, siblings, cousins, parents, and in-laws, as well as professional responsibilities to staff, grantees, and the community. Learn strategies to deal with complex issues of succession, governance, and consensus. This interactive workshop will use lecture, discussion, exercises, and case studies to explore the unique challenges that family members face when leading their relatives through philanthropy decision-making. You will learn strategies for understanding and effectively managing the impact of family relationships and history on the board's functioning—engaging the next generation; the late-adulthood era for the senior generation; the transition of power, inter-branch dynamics and conflict resolution; and the overlap between trustees and staff roles. Topics include:
    • impact of family dynamics on structure and process in family foundations
    • leadership strategies to deal with complex issues concerning transition and governance
    • how to build consensus and work together as a family to resolve conflicts

Presenter: Kelin Gersick, senior partner, Lansberg, Gersick and Associates
Session Designer: Pamela Colman, director, Education and Leadership Development, Council on Foundations

For trustees and family members only.

  • Facing Conflict with Competence, Confidence, and Congruence

    $225 members $375 non-member
How do you show up when conflict emerges in the family system? What is your mental model for intervening in conflict? As professional staff and as consultants to grantmakers, do you feel confident and competent to address and mediate conflict situations?

Differences in perspective, goals, intentions, wants, and desired outcomes are a normal part of active leadership—and organizational life. When avoided, denied, or ignored, these differences can escalate into conflict. Effective communication and conflict management are essential skills for professional staff of family organizations. Successful conflict intervention requires unfettered presence and the skills to both find and build on common ground. This experiential workshop provides tools, practice, and theory to help you deal with the sometimes difficult and often complex challenges of working in family philanthropy. Join us to learn more about your own conflict orientation and how you can more effectively support conflict mediation.
    • Understand more about the nature of conflict.
    • Learn about your own orientation to conflict.
    • Practice your skills as a mediator.
    • Take away new tools and models that you can use in your family foundations.

Presenter: Janice Williams, principal, Janice A. Williams Associates
Session Designer: Pamela Colman, director, Education and Leadership Development, Council on Foundations

    For professional staff only.

  • Next Generation Retreat for Family Members

    $225 members $375 non-member
As Next Gen-ers step into roles as trustees and professional staff of their family philanthropies, leadership development is critical for successful engagement and meaningful experiences. Leadership skills can be learned—and seasoned leaders can continue to sharpen their skills—over time. Whether you’re new to the field or have years of experience, build your capacity to be an effective and collaborative leader.

Through a series of interactive exercises you will assess when and how to exercise your leadership capacities; what will work successfully in the family landscape in which you are operating; and identify areas of leadership you want to strengthen. Most importantly, you will clarify your philanthropic identity and the role you want to play in your family’s philanthropy.

Whether you’re meeting people for the first time or reconnecting with old friends, experience this preconference session with a community of peers who will be your allies and supporters as you step into your leadership role.

    Who should attend:
    • members of Generations X and Y
    • family members who are involved or will be involved in their family’s philanthropy
    • family members engaged in family foundations, donor advised funds, and giving circles
    • family members who are professional staff of their family’s foundation.

If you have additional questions about the retreat, the Council can refer you to one of the retreat facilitators.

Session Designers: 21/64 and Resource Generation
Facilitators: Stosh Cotler, executive vice president, Jewish Funds for Justice and 21/64 trainer; Nicole Lewis, national chapter coordinator, Resource Generation.

For family members of Generation X and Y only.

  • Best Practices for New Foundations

    $225 members $375 non-member
Are you in the planning stages of starting a foundation or have you established one in the last two years? Learn about legal and practical issues—such as private foundation rules, fiduciary responsibility, and proper stewardship of resources—that arise in creating foundations. Cole Wilbur, trustee and former CEO of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Andrew Schulz, Vice President, Legal and Government Relations of the Council on Foundations and Nina Cohen, Managing Director, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Glenmede, will discuss the key legal and practical issues that arise when creating a foundation. Wilbur, Schulz and Cohen will cover the following topics:
    • Legal formation issues: corporations and trusts, nonprofits in general, types of foundations, federal exempt status, and state tax exemptions.
    • Practical formation issues: foundation values, goals, governance, roles of boards and staff, grants management, and board and family member dynamics.
    • Governance: practical applications, the legal and regulatory framework, emerging issues, and best practices.
    • Legal operational issues: private foundation rules, state and federal filing requirements, public disclosure rules, funding issues, and advisers.
    • Foundation stewardship: communications, foundation effectiveness, evaluation, and compensation. This informative, small-group workshop provides a collegial environment for you to get answers to your questions.

Presenters: Cole Wilbur, trustee and former CEO, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation; Andrew Schulz, vice president, Legal and Government Relations, Council on Foundations; Nina Cohen, Managing Director, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Glenmede

  • Off-site Learning Experience - BAM. DUMBO. BedStuy: What Brooklyn Is Coming To

    $150 members $300 non-member
Spend Sunday morning getting acquainted with the quintessential urban archetype: Brooklyn—New York's most populous borough. Brooklyn's got everything, and we'll sample the best it has to offer. Begin in the Fort Greene neighborhood with a behind-the-scenes tour of Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Founded in 1861, BAM is the country's oldest continuously operating performing arts center and is the founding anchor and heart of the BAM Cultural District. From the Fort Greene neighborhood we'll move to Bed Stuy and visit the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, the nation's first community development corporation. We'll eat lunch and wrap up our trip at St. Ann's Warehouse, an avant-garde performing arts space in the neighborhood called DUMBO (which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). While there we'll check out the Brooklyn waterfront and take in DUMBO's breathtaking waterfront views of Manhattan's skyline.

During this excursion, you'll see that Brooklyn is where the real New York's at.

Sunday, January 23, Noon-2:30 p.m.
